From Rough Draft to Final Masterpiece, Your Transcript Evolves in Form and Meaning
Let’s face it: as friendly as the court reporters at Casamo & Associates are, attorneys don’t call on us just for our scintillating conversation skills. Court reporters provide a legal written record of various legal proceedings, and the transcripts that we produce can go on to be used as official proof of what transpired in your deposition, arbitration, or trial.
When you call us, it’s because you need that official record that we can provide. You need us to produce a record that is as close to perfect as possible (meaning nearly 100% accurate), and you would like it to look official, neat, and uniform. We can provide you with just that, but the one thing that we cannot do (even though we’re getting closer with improved technology) is get you this perfect, professional transcript right away.
The Transcript You Get Has Strict Guidelines
In a perfect world, we could turn out perfect transcripts as soon as your deposition is over. Many attorneys ask us why they must wait to receive transcripts, and really, you don’t need to wait if you want a transcript right away—unless you will need it as an official record.
When we’re on the job, we’re practically typing a mile per minute, and in order to do that, we have to take some shortcuts. We use a machine that allows us to type sounds rather than individual words, which saves us a lot of time. Today’s technology is able to transcribe a lot of our “sound typing” into words on the fly, but there are still many things left over that we need to review and perfect.
Even our rough drafts go through some editing in order to make them legible to everyone else, but they are not held to the same standards as a certified copy, and they cannot be used as such. Your best option, if you truly want to get the most out of your transcriptions, is to wait the additional time required to produce a certified, official transcript and request a rough copy in the meantime if you need to review content. Just remember—sometimes the real thing is worth the wait!
